This is a non-diagnostic procedure including a scan of your baby and a blood test and you will be told your risk of having an affected baby, not whether your baby is definitely affected.

What data is collected and what do we look at?

Important background data about the mother is taken:

  • Your age
  • Your ethnicity
  • Your weight
  • Whether you are a smoker or not
  • Previous history of pregnancy abnormalities
  • Conception – IVF or spontaneous

During the scan we will look at particular features of your baby:

  • Thickness of the Nuchal Translucency (Nuchal Fold)
  • Presence or absence of a nasal bone
  • Baby’s heart rate
  • Your baby’s size and development in accordance with dates
  • Baby’s abdominal wall
  • Baby’s stomach and bladder
  • Check all four limbs are present
  • Site of the placenta
  • Check the pregnancy is intrauterine (growing in the womb)

All this information plus the results of a blood test will enable us to assess your risk of having an affected baby.

NHS or Private Appointment?

Nuchal Screening is now widely available through the NHS in England but is performed as part of your dating scan at around 12 weeks and NOT as a separate examination.

  • The NHS examination does not necessarily look at all of the above when calculating your risk.
  • The NHS result will be either ‘high’ or ‘low’ risk and you will not be given an individual score.

This procedure is non-invasive and therefore presents no risk to your baby.  The main benefit is that because it is done in early pregnancy you can use the information to make an informed choice as to whether you should consider  invasive testing  such as amniocentesis which carries a small risk of miscarriage.

FMF Accredited

We are an accredited site of the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF). Our Sonographers are trained and continually assessed by the FMF and we use the FMF software to calculate your risk. Visit the Fetal Medicine Foundation Web site for more information.

The cost of a private appointment is: Nuchal Translucency Scan plus Blood Test: £180
